2006.11.03 DBK Remerging notes for a23 CFC data submitted by Mark Warner File sent by Warner on 2006.10.30 contained updated CFC-11, 12 to be merged into existng bottle file. NOTES: - used mrgsea to merge both CFC11/12 values with no errors. - Checked merged file using wocecvt with no errors detected. - Moved new merged file to a23hy.txt - File converted to .csv and netcdf formats with no errors.
t was decided at today's CCHDO meeting to merge or remerge CFCs for all WHP cruises in Mark Warner's CFC DQE file (Southern Ocean WHO lines). This will assure all that the CFCs for these cruises are indeed updated as intended. Danie and Sarilee will attend to this promptly. Danie will see that the sections of greatest urgency to Lynne receive top priority. The list of cruises in Mark's file was as follows: A21: EXPOCODE: 06MT11_5 A23: EXPOCODE: 74JC10_1 I06S: EXPOCODE: 35MFCIVA_1 MARGINEX: EXPOCODE: 09AR9604_1 S03_S04I: EXPOCODE: 09AR9404_1 S04A: EXPOCODE: 06AQANTIII_4 S04I: EXPOCODE: 320696_3 S04P: EXPOCODE: 90KDIOFFE6_1 SR04A_A12: EXPOCODE: 06AQANTX_4 SR04_ANTXV4: EXPOCODE: 06ANT15_4 It may be that the CFCs for the following cruises from the list above have already been updated: > sr04antxv4 > s04p > a23 > a21 But, to be certain, the CCHDO will update them as well. As far as why these cruises did not get updated with Mark's DQE'd CFCs, we have no idea. Sorry. All of the other ocean basins' CFCs were updated years ago. Jim Swift
Merged the CFC-11 and CFC-12 submitted by Mark Warner into the online file. Put file online, made new exchange file, sent notes to Jerry. Netcdf file needs to be made.
Merged TCARBN and PCO2 into online file. Made new exchange file.
Please, merge the CO2 data (TCARBN, pCO2 @4deg.C, and their flags) for WOCE section A23 (EXPOCODE 74JC10_1) into WHPO bottle files. The CO2 data is in WHPO INCOMING ftp area.

Tritium, helium, delhe3 and error values have been merged into the current online bottle file. wocecvt was run with no errors. exchange and netcdf files have been created as well as bottle inventory file. All previous files were renamed and moved to original directory. Merging notes for A23 HE/TR: Obtained original bottle file from a23 parent directory. Obtained A23 helium and tritium data (sent by B. Klein) zip file sent by Klein by way of S. Diggs. Parameters merged were TRITIUM, TRITER, HELIUM, HELIER, DELHE3, DELHER, and flags where given. Used mrgsea for merging all parameters, no errors were encountered. Final output file is called outputTRHEHE2.txt this file was edited to include updated date/name stamp and renamed a23hy_finalWOCE.txt. wocecvt was run on a23hy_finalWOCE.TXT with no errors produced. Exchange bottle file created. NetCDF bottle file creation failed; must consult S. Diggs. All previous online files were replaced with newly merged versions and this action was RCS'd. A copy of these notes were sent to J. Kappa.

The A23 bottle file with merged helium, tritium and neon is in~dave/SDIGGS/A23 together with an updated summary file, the new exchange file and a "notes" file.
CTD file have no oxygen flag, in the CTD exchange files the last column is empty, which causes a problem for the netcdf code. A 5 was added for that field in the exchange files to account for the missing flags.
Corrected missing values for nutrients from -999.00 to -9.00. Appear to have been mistakenly changed to -999.00 starting with version 20010803WHPOSIODM. Found Station 77, Sample 7723, 9.4db silicate and phosphate to have quality flags 9 but with apparently good values. Sta 75 Pres 10.5db Sil 3.83 NO2 NO3 14.35 PO4 1.15 QUALT1 222 76 14.4 -9.00 -9.00 -9.00 999 77 9.4 4.57 -9.00 1.17 999 78 6.0 4.00 -9.00 1.32 252 79 8.9 3.86 11.92 1.03 222 Changed QUALT2 flags for 77/7723 SIL and P04 to 3. Left QUALT1 flags as given by originator. No nutrient DQE found. Checked new exchange file with JOA and put both bottle files on-line.
Added QUALT2 identical to QUALT1 then modified QUALT2 salinity and oxygen codes as described in DQE documentation received from Bob Millard Dec 4, 2001. New woce bottle file and exchange bottle file on-line.
CTD has been converted to exchange using the new code and put online.
New documents for this cruise have replaced the old pdf and txt files that were online. The DQE report for CTD data and bottle salinity and oxygen data have been added.
I was just plotting up property sections from A23, and found a big bullseye in phosphate at station 86, bottle 13, 1702 dbar: value is 3.59 (highest on the whole section, and makes a bullseye in the section with lots of extra contours). I don't see any quality flag for it, or a comment in the doc file (although I read through that a little too quickly perhaps). Have you noted this and possibly either flagged it or removed it from your data sets? I think it should be flagged in the WHP data set, but I think we really need your input before we can flag it in the QUALT1 field, where I think the flag should be (since it may be years and years if ever before there are qualt2 flags). There isn't any corresponding feature in nitrate, which makes it even more suspect. I've put my section plot in ftp gyre.ucsd.edu cd nonpub/talley/a23 thanks very much for your attention!
A23 DQE report + following attached file of stuff is in WHPO incoming directory. Let me know if it's ok & can be read? regards, Bob Attached is the following DQE information for A23. 1) A23deq1.doc - DQE report in Word version 9.0 with figures included 2) A23nx.hyd - Water sample file with 2nd DQE quality word 3) a23nx.chg - only those water sample scans where Q2 is not equal Q1 4) A23figs.exe - self-extracting zip file of all figures as jpg files
I hope it's possible to get an extension on my DQE contract. The current funds didn't arrive until late June 2001. I've finished or nearly finished checking over & writing up 3 of the 5 datasets we talked about QCing- (A13 (submitted) , A14, & A23). Cruise A17 is 2 legs with 235 stations & will take more time. Between X-mas holidays & a vacation in mid-Jan., I probably can not finish A17 until sometime in late Feb. 2002. Are there any more datasets to be QCed? I may have a little time available for DQEing one more cruise with money remaining.
Bottle file Station 86, bottle 13 contained a bad value for phosphate. Quality 1 flag was set to 4 to reflect the unknown problem with the value. Readme file in original directory contains copies of the emails sent to Jim regarding the bad value.
Bottle file has been converted to exchange format and put online.
Please change DEGC to UMOL/KG for OXYGEN in the a23hy.txt file that is on the web page for A23 section.
As per Alex Kozyr's email, I have edited the OXYGEN units header to reflect the correct UMOL/KG units. I have moved the previous bottle file to the original subdirectory and have edited all references of this cruise to reflect this change.

The A23 bottle file with merged helium, tritium and neon is in~dave/SDIGGS/A23 together with an updated summary file, the new exchange file and a "notes" file.
I'd like to advise you that the A23 CTD data in exchange format on yourserver (a23_ct1.zip) only contains the stations >= 100 (29 stations).
D. Muus merged the following newer values from B. Klein TRITIUM, TRITER, HELIUM, HELIER, DELHE3, DELHER, NEON & NEONER. New bottle data online, exchange file pending. A23 merging notes August 2, 2001, D. Muus 1. Parameter numbers for DELHE3 (11) & NEON (17) were added to the summary file on the web (20010328WHPOSIOKJU). Parameter number 9 (TRITUM) deleted from Station 24 since no tritium reported. Also: a) Summary file has no COR DEPTH. Corrected bottom depths are included in the Chief Scientist's cruise report in the DOC section. b) Comments appear incomplete or use unexplained abreviations. e.g. Station 2 "I,CFC BOTTLE BLANKS" Station 3 "T,START SECTION" Station 6 "T" Station 10 "IT,CAST 1 FAILED" Station 124 "I" Station 128 "I,LAST CTD in SECTION" "I" probably means "Irradiance buoy deployed" "T" probably means "Trace metals sampled" 3. TRITUM, HELIUM, DELHE3 & NEON data given for following stations, casts, and bottles not in web bottle file:
Correct imperfect SUM file by removing leading zeros and placing a CASTNO of 1 in each of the FLT entries. These changes were made so that the exchange formatter would accept the SUM file for processing

CTD exchange files were put online.
Expocodes for sum and bottle were modified. Expocodes in all ctd files have been editted to match the underscored expocode in the sum and bottle files New files were zipped and replaced existing ctd files online.
2000.12.11 KJU File contained here is a CRUISE SUMMARY and NOT sumfile. Documentation is online. 2000.10.11 KJU Files were found in incoming directory under whp_reports. This directory was zipped, files were separated and placed under proper cruise. All of them are sum files. Received 1997 August 15th.
I forgot to mention that the a23 tritium, helium and neon data are not public yet.
Further to my e-mail (below) in July requesting that the A23 data be made public, I can now add that this should include the CFC data since the paper we were waiting for has now been accepted. So now all the A23 data may be made public.
Jim forwarded your e-mail to the rest of the office and I have unencrypted the entire bottle file (including the cfc's) and ctd files. The data are now public on the WHPO tables.
I've unencrypted A23 (74JC10_1) bottle file and ctd files. The files have inverted pressures and will need to be re-ordered to increasing pressures. I will contact Sarilee on this.
The reformatted version of the bottle file for A23 has been placed out on the public website. Pressures are now in increasing order.
It is now 4 years since A23 and our PhD students are beginning to finish their theses and think about writing papers. Brian King and I would therefore like to put the A23 data set into the public domain i.e. unpassworded. This applies to the physical data, nuts/oxys, he/trit. However I have not had the go-ahead from Andy Watson yet to release the CFC and carbon tet data, so until you hear from him these should remain encryted please.
the non-public helium/tritium data have been submitted. - B. Klein
