Note on CFC units correction. EXPOPCODE 316N151_3 May 11, 2011 Changed CFC units from PMOL/L to PMOL/KG in WOCE, Exchange and NetCDF bottle files. Original data file from Deborah Lebel, LDEO, received April 10, 2002, says "08 Apr 2001; CFCs are in pmol/kg"
2008.08.25 DBK New merging subdirectory is: 2008.08.04_second_mrg_attmpt Previous merge attempt and all associated data files are located in: 2007.11.19_sumbitted_he_ne_tr_jenkins In order to work around the quality flag rigidity of mrgsea, copies of the helium and tritium files were created with two columns of identical quality bytes for each corresponding data value. The software mrgsea then puts both quality bytes in each of the two quality words exisiting in the bottle file. Helium and neon file is: acce01_trit_sub_edtQB.csv Tritium file is: acce01_trit_sub_edtQB.csv where QB stands for the edited Quality Byte column. The merging process was then identical to the first attempt at merging described below. No errors were enocuntered. Copies of all output files and all unmerged samples (due to duplicate sampling/station) have been included in the above subdirectory (in unmrgd_samps). Final output bottle file is called: a20hy_dhe3dher_heher_nener_trter.txt This file was reanmed a20hy.txt and format tested with wocecvt. No errors were encountered. Duplicate depths exist. The following parameters were not recognized by wocecvt: PCO2 C14ERR CFC113
2008.08.22 DBK During format checking it was discovered that the merging process for these data places the quality byte for each corresponding value in the incorrect quality word in the woce-formatted bottle file. This quality byte is also subsequently left out of the exchange file during conversion, due to it's placement in the incorrect quality word. A solution to this issue is being investigated at this time.
2008.08.18 DBK Jenkins was notified on 2008.08.14 of two problem stations. The values were edited accrodingly. New file containing corrected values is located in 2007.11.19_sumbitted_he_ne_tr_jenkins and is called acce01_he_ne_sub_edtQB.csv See email below: Hello Dr. Jenkins, I have been working on merging the helium and tritium data into A20 (316N151_3) and found the following questionable values. Could please advise us on a course of action? stn 62/ cst 1/ smp 18 neon value is -77.180 (range is 0-10)nmol/kg. Flag is 2 (acceptable value) stn 86/ cst 1/ smp 13 helium value is 3.575 (range is 1-3)nmol/kg. Flag is 2 (acceptable value) The bottle file for this cruise is online at CCHDO. Please review the WOCE -formatted bottle file for referencing the merged data. There is a flag discrepancy in the exchange bottle file that we have discovered and are working on fixing at the moment. Please let me know if you have any questions or find any problems.
Thank you for pointing out the problems. Station 62/1/18 was a failed analysis (the mass spectrometer lost the peak) so should be classed as a bad number. Sample 86/1/13 had a leak in its sample tube, so should also be rejected. I'm sorry these slipped through our QC.
2008.07.24 DBK Included in this directory are the he/tr data updates submitted by Bill Jenkins on 2007.11.19 Merging helium, delhelium3, neon: Original file had very large precisions. File was edited as follows below to adhere to WOCE handbook: helium: from F8.9 to F8.3 neon: from F8.9 to F8.3 delhelium3: from F8.3 to F8.2 Values were edited into a fixed width file in order to use mergsea. original file called acce01_he_ne_sub.csv edited file named acce01_he_ne_sub_edt.txt Mrgsea did not merge the following station/cast/niskin combinations: In all cases the first of the four replicate measurements was merged by the program, however it should be noted that duplicate cst/stn/samp combinations do exist for these bottles and the values contained within the bottle file are not averages of the duplicate mearsurements below: 35 / 1 12 35 / 1 12 35 / 1 12 58 / 1 21 58 / 1 21 58 / 1 21 66 / 1 15 66 / 1 15 66 / 1 15 These measurement combinations are contained in files named: a20_1997_delhe3_unmrgd.txt a20_1997_delher_unmrgd.txt a20_1997_he_unmrgd.txt a20_1997_heer_unmrgd.txt a20_1997_ne_unmrgd.txt a20_1997_neer_unmrgd.txt ------------------- Merging tritium and error into bottle file: Original file had very large precisions. Since submission of the final CFC data for the repeat of WOCE line A20 (Kn173/1), Sept 22 - Oct 20, 2003, we have found some data points that are questionable and should be flagged as such. All CFC data for station 38 and for bottles 24, 26, 32, 34, 35, 36 of station 40 should be flagged as questionable.
Thanks for the updates and we'll revise these data points and let you know when it's been done.
Dear Dr. Pickart, I found a paper: "WOCE/ACCE cruises in the subtropical N. Atlantic on KNORR in 1997" by yourself, Terry. Joyce and Bob Millard. With your permission I would like to include this paper, or just the parts related directly to A20, in the WOCE cruise report, with appropriate citation, of course. Please let me know if this is alright with you.
Of course you can include any or all of this in your report.
I have downloaded the NetCDF bottle data from the 1997 occupation of the a20 line. All freon_11 & freon_12 values, in all of the files, are missing values (-999). Based on the NetCDF metadata and the Data History from the web, it looks like the NetCDF files were generated before the CFCs were merged. Could this be looked into please?
Keith Lindsay (see email below) noted that the NetCDF file was generated before the CFC's were merged. I regenerated the NetCDF files for the bottle data using the Apr. 9, 2003 file a20_hy1.csv, and put the file online. I emailed Keith to let him know the file had been updated.
Corrected PHSPHT flags re e-mail from A. Kozyr. Merged DELC13 from Gerlach, DELC14 and C14ERR from Key, and TCARBN, ALKALI, PH and PCO2 from Kozyr. Put file online, made new exchange file, sent notes to Jerry. a20 merging notes: April 8, 2003 Alex Kozyr noted (see e-mail below) that the flags for PHSPHT were 1 in the online file. He had a file with the time stamp 20000607WHPOSIODMB that had correct flags. I copied the PHSPHT flags from 20000607WHPOSIODMB into the online file. Merged the DELC13 from file found in ... original/20020401.071220_GERLACH_A20 Merged DELC14 and C14ERR from file found in ... original/20030109_A20_C14_KEY. Data history indicated that in May of 2002 Kozyr submitted final data for TCARBN, ALKALI, PH, PCO2, and PCO2TMP. I got this data from his web site and merged it. Sarilee Anderson

Data from Key in e-mail message checked/decoded and placed in appropriate directory in "original" data area.
The A20 and A22 C14 results are attached. I have QC'ed the data and each file contains flag values. I just got these a couple of days ago, but they can go public as soon as NOSAMS releases the printed data report which should be very soon. It'll take me about 2 weeks to get my "final" report to you. The electronic version of the data I received from NOSAMS did not include C13, but they (Ann McNichol) should have those numbers.
Merged the CFC11 and CFC12 submitted by Lebel in April, 2002 into the online file. Put new file online, and made a new exchange file. Notes on A20 merging: Alex Kozyr sent an e-mail asking about CFC's for a20. I checked and found 20020410.102538_LEBEL_A20.a20.dat in /usr/export/html-public/ data/onetime/atlantic/a20/original/20020410.102538_LEBEL_A20. I merged the CFC11 and CFC12 from this file into the online file 20020205WHPOSIODM. There were no apparent problems. There were 4 stations whose pressures were not in descending order. I reordered those stations.
I have put the final CO2-related data files for the N. Atlantic Ocean WOCE Sections A20, A22, and A24 to the WHPO ftp INCOMING area. There are 4 CO2 parameters: Total CO2, Total Alkalinity, pH, and pCO2 (with pCO2 temp) with quality flags. Note, that these data are different from those you have in your data base for these cruises on WHPO web site. Please confirm the data submissio
The data disposition is: Public The file format is: Plain Text (ASCII) The archive type is: NONE - Individual File The data type(s) is: Other: updated/finalized CFC data with QUALT2 flags The file contains these water sample identifiers: Cast Number (CASTNO) Station Number (STATNO) Bottle Number (BTLNBR) Sample Number (SAMPNO) LEBEL, DEBORAH would like the following action(s) taken on the data: Merge Data Place Data Online Update Parameters Any additional notes are: This is the finalized CFC data from A20. Scale is SIO98. Includes QUALT2 flag.
Moved data from /usr/export/html-public/cgi/SUBMIT/INCOMING/20020401.103223_GERLACH_A20 to /usr/export/html-public/data/onetime/atlantic/a20/original/20020401.103223_GERLACH_A20. Data contains a readme file from the data submission page and a txt file called 20020401.103223_GERLACH_A20_a20_desc.txt that lists the flags for the replicate value, it is a detailed listing of those stations which have c13 flags.
Carbon data merged with web bottle file. Exchange file version on-line. WOCE format version will be on-line after web links modified. Notes on A20 merging Feb 6, 2002 D.Muus 1. Merged TCARBN, ALKALI, PCO2 and PH from: /usr/export/html-public/data/onetime/atlantic/a20/original/2001.05.04_A20_A22_A24_CARBON_KOZYR/a20carb.txt into A20 bottle file from web (20010328WHPOSIOKJU) 2. Used QUALT1 codes for QUALT2. 3. Unable to find CFC data from LDEO(Smethie). Table says at WHPOSIO but not in .../onetime/atlantic/a20/original. Table says He/Tr not yet available from Jenkins(WHOI) and C-14 not yet available from Key(Princeton). 4. Sta 75 Ca 1 Sample 33 has CTDPRS -0.5db which gives wocecvt error. Changed to 0.0db. 5. Made new exchange file for Bottle data. 6. Checked new bottle file with Java Ocean Atlas.
CTD has been converted to exchange using the new code and put online.
*check.txt file created for this cruise.
CTD, Bottle The following are results from the examminer.pl and plotter.pl code that were run on this cruise. Not all of the errors are reported but rather a summery of what was found. For more information you can go to the cruise directory, and look at the NEW file called CruiseLine_check.txt. Two plot files are also present. _oxy.ps and _sal.ps *********************************************************** The _oxy.ps and _sal.ps files created. CTD file is producing errors. Missing some values because examiner.pl reports use of uninitialized values for the files in ct1.zip No _check.txt file created for this cruise
A20 316N151_3 Birdwhistell listed as PI for missing He/Tr data but WHPO presumes this means Jenkins.WHPO records indicate he/tr data not yet submitted. Request for earliest possible submission sent to Bill Jenkins.
The exchange bottle file name in directory and index file was modified to lower case. CTD exchange files were put online.
Bottle file in exchange format has been linked to website.

I just put the A20 data in your anonymous ftp INCOMING. One of the zipped rpt files is the one you got from Bob Pickart, the other one i constructed from data i got fromthe nutrient people, the ctd people, and post cruise processing that i did to the data. Questions re data aquisition should be directed to Terry Mckee (TMcKee@whoi.edu), data calibration to Bob Millard (RMillard@whoi.edu). Anything else (ie unit conversion, Temp conversion, formatting...) I can try to handle.
I just put the 'zipped-up' cruise report and sum file in INCOMING.
