The following files are now available online under 'Files as received', unprocessed by the CCHDO. i2check.txt
Bob Key submitted these DELC13 data to Lynne Talley 09/21/2009 for inclusion in the Indian Ocean Atlas.
Expocode: 316N145_14 Ship: KNORR Woce Line: I02E Note: Update DELC13
Expocode: 316N145_15 Ship: KNORR Woce Line: I02W Note: Update DELC13
I02E 316N145_14 and I02W 316N145_15 Merged HELIUM, NEON, and DELHE3 (shallow values) from file sent by Jenkins to Lynne Talley on Feb. 17, 2005 into online file. File sent by Jenkins did not have Q flags. Lynne said to assign 2 to the values until we received updated flags from Jenkins. Merged DELHE3 and DELHER (deep values) sent by Bob Newton to Lynne Talley on April 12, 2005.
Here is the I2 helium data. Since Bob Newton sent it only directly to Dave and Jim, I'm also forwarding it right now to whpo so that Sarilee sees it and so that the right person can get it merged in the WHPO file. Sarilee, would you have a chance to do this? (You might have already received it.) Lynne
Attached is our most recent version of the I2 deep tritium and helium data. Peter and I didn't find any major problems, but we did i.d. a few more questionable measurements than previously. You can just ignore the color codings. Peter and I use the colors to quickly ID problems for each other, but the results are recorded in the WOCE flags. The last column is our internal Lab measurement ID.
Bill Jenkins sent the following spreadsheet with his I2 delta-3helium data. He says that sometime in the future he'll send other I2 data (neon, helium etc), but this delta-3helium data should be final.
I trust you wanted the data for delta-3He rather than the He and Ne concentration data. The reason I mention this is that I need to review the standardization of the mass spec (the real reason why I've been so slow), which will affect the concentration numbers but not the delta-3He. Once I've done that, I shall submit the final data to WHPO.
Expocode: 316N145_14 Bottle: (helium, delhe3, neon, delher, qualt1, qualt2) Merged HELIUM, NEON, and DELHE3 sent by Jenkins, and DELHE3 and DELHER sent by B. Newton into online file. Made new exchange and netcdf files.
SE asked me to check the DELC14 value on sta. 1084, cast 1, samp. 22. The online file had a value of -1.6. I checked the original file submitted by Bob Key and the value was -157. I changed the value in the online file to -157.0, and made new exchange and netcdf files.
Bottle: (delc14, qualt1, qualt2) Corrected a DELC14 value, sta. 1084, cast 1, samp. 34, noted by SE and varified by Bob Key. Made new exchange and netcdf files.
Expocode: 316N145_14 Bottle: (delc13, qualt1, qualt2) Remerged the DELC13 to replace the one decimal place values with two decimal place values. Made new exchange and netcdf file. Put all files online.
The U.S. WOCE Indian Ocean Survey consisted of 9 cruises covering the period December 1,1994 to January 22,1996.All of the cruises used the R/V Knorr operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. A total of 1244 hydrographic stations were occupied with radiocarbon sampling on 366 stations.

There are two data files which have he/ne/delhe3 overlapping in them, at least for i02e. One sent by Jenkins which sarilee reformatted; this file contains delhe3, he, ne but no flags. The other set, sent by an unknown source on 2000.05.30, has delhe3, he, ne with intermittent flags, but not the same bottles/samples for each station and cast of the Jenkins file. Jenkins data is in: i02e/original/2000.10.17_I02E_TRITIUM_HELIUM_JENKINS the other file is in: i02e/original/2000.05.30_I2E_DOC_SEA For I02E the overlap is only about 5 stations: jenkins data only has the first 5 stations of i02e in it, all rest are other indian lines. The original file from Jenkins contained tritium data for all of the Indian Ocean lines he was working on, which is why Sarilee had to split them up. the 2000.05.30 file has entire i02e line in it.
I have placed the updated dqed CFC data sent by Wisegarver in the following directory .../onetime/indian/i02/i02e/original/ 2001.09.18_I02E_CFC_DQE_WISEGARVER included are data file and submission form README file. Data are in need of merging at this time.

The following are results from the examminer.pl and plotter.pl code that were run on this cruise. Not all of the errors are reported but rather a summary of what was found. For more information you can go to the cruise directory, and look at the NEW file called CruiseLine_check.txt. Two plot files are also present. _oxy.ps and _sal.ps _oxy.ps and _sal.ps created for this cruise. No problmes found with bottle file. It was brought to my attention that the WOCE Pacific/Indian He-Tr data was not as yet made public. After submitting it to you last year, I had intended on going through it one more time to ensure there were no problems with it. Unfortunately, I have not had the time to do this. Is it possible, therefore, to release it as public data, and if there are any subsequent minor revisions, to make changes? I suspect there might be a few samples in the set that might have got through our initial quality control.
following up on bill jenkins's message, i would like to ask you to make public all ldeo woce tritium/he data that have been submitted to you. because the tritium/he community has not yet finished the final calibration of the data, i might have to apply minor corrections to these data once the intercal. effort has been completed. our acce work was funded over a 5-year period that ended in 2000. consequently, this data set is further behind in quality control before submission, but i expect that we will get these data ready soon. SR3 was never funded in a 'regular' fashion, but i used noaa corc funds to keep the measurements of this sample set moving. i expect to finish the analyses this summer and submit them in fall.
Hi Jim, Sure, I would be glad to look over the Indian Ocean data for you. Sarilee has started plotting up I01 for me to start on. - Arnold
I have put the Jenkins tritium data into WOCE format. There were no quality codes so I set the TRITUM to 2.
I have put the Jenkins helium and neon in WOCE format. There were no quality codes so I set the HELIUM, DELHE3, and NEON to 2.

Was I right that the I2 nutrients were in per liter rather than per kilogram, and that I8N and I9N were in per kilogram? Also, did Joe Jennings and Lou Gordon ever review the I1 nutrients? All I have seen is the shipboard data, and the silicic acid values there for Stations 973, 974, 975, and 996 appear high at all depths, suggestive of a standardization problem.
I took a quick look at the I02 data. The original data indicated that the nuts were in umol/l units. Assuming that was correct I converted them to umol/kg units. At this point Bullister is the only one who can tell us if the original data was mislabeled. If so, then the nuts should not have been converted.
Moved files i2EHeNe.DOC* i2EHeNe.SEA* from ftp-incoming.2000.10.23 They were received May 30, 2000. No header was found in files and no relevant email searched by date was found. Could not determine who sender was. - C. Uribe
I have merged the latest CFC11/12 values into I02E and I02W bottle files. As per our conversation, I have put them up as public, and updated the tables accordingly. I will also write Bullister and inform him of the updated CFC data.
I've just put a total of 13 files [carbon data measured in Indian (6 files) and Atlantic (7 files) oceans] to the WHPO ftp area. Please let me know if you get data okay.
Post these revised files at the web site, with the CFC data 'public' for these cruises.
I'm a data analyst for the WHPO and I'm writing to inform you of a problem brought to our attention by one of our DQ experts with the I02E and I02W bottle files. It appears that each file has a bottle/sample entry that has been duplicated. I02E: Station 1127 has two entries for bottle number 17, sample number SIH038. The data for these two entries are slightly different.
Sarilee has fixed the i02e QUALT1 problem (it was shy one flag when it came back from reformatting). And I have put the corrected file out on the website. I have updated the table to reflect the file update.
I have put the final CO2-related data file for the Indian Ocean WOCE Section I2 to the WHPO ftp INCOMING area. There are two CO2 parameters: Total CO2 and alkalinity with quality flags.
The quality of the Ba data from most WOCE legs in the Indian Ocean turned out to be quite poor; far worse than attainable analytical precision (+/-20% as opposed to 2%). We recorded many vials which came back with loose caps and evaporation associated with that seems to be the primary problem. The only hope I have of producing a decent data set is to run both Ba and a conservative element simultaneously and then relating that to the original salinity of the sample. We will be taking delivery on a high resolution ICPMS here at OSU sometime this winter which would make the project analytically feasible and economical. I do not presently have the funds in hand to do this and so have archived the samples for the time being. I don't think the WHPO would derive any benefit from the present data set. KKF
I have put the final CO2-related data file for the Indian Ocean WOCE Section I2 (R/V Knorr) to the WHPO ftp INCOMING area. There are two CO2 parameters: Total CO2 and Alkalinity with quality flags. No fCO2 parameters were measured during the cruise. Please note that I combined sections I2E and I2W in one file.
Re: I02 (316N145) I have spoken with Dr. Johnson regarding his I02 line and replaced all bottle and CTD data files with one sent by M. Swartz. All CTD headers have been modified to fit WHP standards, and the following parameters have been masked out pending approval from their individual PIs: TCARBN ALKALI FCO2 CFC-11 CFC-12 All tables and related files have been modified. IMPORTANT NOTE: To fit the WOCE file format standard, then implied precision of the OXYGEN numbers have been rounded to 1 decimal place. Jim tells me that the 10s place in umol/kg are about 1/1000 or so of ml/l accuracy so it should be no matter. Dr. Johnson, hopefully, will reply and clear up this issue. -sd
The I02 (316N145_14 and 316N145_15) files have finally been updated and the nutrients and oxygen values have been converted to the correct units (umol/kg from ml/l).
1999.05.12 S.Anderson: i02e and i02w Converted the oxygen and nutrients from liter units to kg units. Used 25 deg for oxygen conversion since they used the aliquot method.
We are about to press yet another CD of the public WHP data set and it would be nice to include the CFCs from I02. If the values in the files that we have are not final, could you possibly send us the improved numbers?
I corrected all of the CTD file headers so that they have the corrected line and expo code
I've just uploaded onto the WHPO ftp incoming site a 4.8mbyte zip file named i2.zip containing 177 files, which are the complete I2 final dataset with the proper variables. All files were dated from June of 1998, with the exception of the directory listing file i2dir.doc, which I just made.
I have decrypted and placed the Bottle and CTD data from WHP I02 on our public website. I have removed all values except the O2, (salnty) and Nutrients. All tables and database entries have been amended accordingly.
With the agreement of my co-chief scientist Bruce Warren, I am writing to ask that you make the CTD/O2 and bottle data (Salinity, Oxygen, and Nutrients) public for both legs of I2 (I02E and I02W). While the DQE process is incomplete and we have only recently received the final data from the WHOI CTD group and the OSU nutrient group, it has been nearly three years since the end of the cruise and the time has come to make the data available. By copying this message to John Bullister, Bill Jenkins & Peter Schlosser, and Bob Key, I hope to encourage them to release the CFC, Tr/He, and C-14 data sets as soon as they are able.
I have just put all the "final" but pre-DQE I2 CTD files, .sum file, and .sea files, and doc files provided to me by the WHOI ctd group in your "incoming" anonymous FTP site. As I understand it the "final" nutrients from OSU have been merged into the .sea file. However, CFCs are preliminary, Tritium, Helium, and Delc14 are not included, and Tcarbon, alkalinity, and fCo2 are preliminary (where preliminary means shipboard).
