2006.11.27 DBK Merging notes for Mark Warner's updated CFC file. Original file sent 10/30/2006. This file contained dqe'd CFC-11 and CFC-12 values, however the file contained multiple values for identical bottle number and CTD pressure combinations, which made it almost impossible to know which value to merge into the existing bottle file. Therefore Mark sent a second updated file received 11/ /2006 in which this duplicate bottle/pressure problem was corrected. This file was used to merge updated values into the current cchdo online bottle file for sr03_e (09AR9604_1). Following notes were made: -Used mrgsea to merge CFC-11 and CFC-12 values. -Checked file with wocecvt with no errors. -Mark's updated file contained values for stations not present in either online bottle file or sumfile. These station/bottle/sample values were not merged because they did not exist in the bottle file:: 16, 21, 29, 43, 60, 65, 77, 112, 146, 147 - Station 64 bottle number 113, pressure 902.1 had two entries in the new file and so the first occurrance was merged. This will be brought to Mark Warner's attention. - several values existed as -9.000, however had flags of "4" which mean "bad value". Mrgsea has changed Qualt flags for values of -9 to "9" "sample not drawn". This occurred for station/bottle/pressure combinations of: 6,3,203.3 ; 14, 9, 1302.1 ; 89, 7, 1604.0 ; This will be brought to Mark Warner's attention, however it is CCHDO's policy to match a -9 data value with the corresponding "9" Quality code. Exchange Conversion: - The sumfile for this cruise needed the following edits in order to convert to exchange only. Edited version is not online but will remain in the "remerge working directory" in the original directory for this cruise.: -All leading zeros were removed from the statin numbers to correspond to the bottle file stations. -Non-SR03 stations were labeled "UNK" -All missing depth values were filled in with place holding characters. Once these edits were completed the file was converted to exhange and netcdf with no erros. Files were placed in the online data directories.
I'll clean this file up (it wasn't a WOCE line and did not get a full WOCE DQE treatment) and ftp it to you.
Hi Mark- Sarilee and I have been working on remerging all of the CFC values in the list below. I don't think she's run into any problems, but I need to run some questions by you before I finish. SR03- The updated file sent has only station, bottle number and CTD pressure to use in the merging. Normally, this would still be okay, however some of the stn, btl, ctdprs combinations are identical with different values for CFC's i.e. stn 4, smpl 7, ctdprs 12.5 has two values for CFC's. This makes selecting which value to merge almost impossible to know. The online bottle file only has one occurrance of this stn, smpl, ctdprs and value. Can you advise us on how you would like the duplicate values addressed?
t was decided at today's CCHDO meeting to merge or remerge CFCs for all WHP cruises in Mark Warner's CFC DQE file (Southern Ocean WHO lines). This will assure all that the CFCs for these cruises are indeed updated as intended. Danie and Sarilee will attend to this promptly. Danie will see that the sections of greatest urgency to Lynne receive top priority. The list of cruises in Mark's file was as follows: A21: EXPOCODE: 06MT11_5 A23: EXPOCODE: 74JC10_1 I06S: EXPOCODE: 35MFCIVA_1 MARGINEX: EXPOCODE: 09AR9604_1 S03_S04I: EXPOCODE: 09AR9404_1 S04A: EXPOCODE: 06AQANTIII_4 S04I: EXPOCODE: 320696_3 S04P: EXPOCODE: 90KDIOFFE6_1 SR04A_A12: EXPOCODE: 06AQANTX_4 SR04_ANTXV4: EXPOCODE: 06ANT15_4 It may be that the CFCs for the following cruises from the list above have already been updated: > sr04antxv4 > s04p > a23 > a21 But, to be certain, the CCHDO will update them as well. As far as why these cruises did not get updated with Mark's DQE'd CFCs, we have no idea. Sorry. All of the other ocean basins' CFCs were updated years ago. Jim Swift

Jim suggests asking you about concerns with the S03 & SR03 datasets. I have only a couple of weeks and I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction to best use this time to address problems with the data. I've looked over S03 + a couple of SR03 legs. The data I've looked over seem pretty reasonable except for the 130 station collected from >28-Jan-1996 to 23-Mar-1996: SUM file name sr03_esu.txt. There are some pretty significant density instablities. It would nice to get some raw time series data & try adjusting the C/T lag. Are there other SR03 cruises that you've noticed problems with? The salinity & oxygen calibrations of S03 looks reasonable. Have you noticed any problems with salt/oxygen calibrations in the repeat sections?
CTD has been converted to exchange and put online. Data has been checked with JOA.
Added this cruise to the website under line SR03. Stations 119-132: SR3 Stations 4-118,133-145: MARGINEX. This cruise was originally called MARGINEX but only part of the stations are MARGINEX, the rest belong to SR03.
You can make: > Line Expocode Parameter > MARGINEX 09AR9604_1 BTL > MARGINEX 09AR9604_1 CTD > SR03 09AR9501_1 BTL public and put them on the CD. Same applies to all the Aurora Australis data submitted to WHPO i.e. you can make it all public and include on CD if you wish.
I've just finished resending all the data for the Aurora Australis cruises au9404, au9501, au9604 and au9601. For the record, I sent them all to you last May, but I guess you were receiving heaps of data at the time. Please consider all these cruises as submitted for WOCE assessment. Here's what I have just sent: 1. au9404 - sections SR3(P12) and S4 107 x *.ctd files 1 x *.sea file 1 x *.sum file contents.doc contents of data report a9404.doc data report cfc_repo.doc CFC report (unpublished document) Note: the 3 *.doc files are MS WORD documents (I ftp'd them as binary files - you can't see the graphs on the screen, but I they should still come out when you print). 2. au9501 - section SR3(P12) 62 x *.ctd files 1 x *.sea file 1 x *.sum file 3. au9604 - Antarctic Margin Experiment (Marginex) 131 x *.ctd files 1 x *.sea file 1 x *.sum file 4. au9601 - section SR3(P12) 66 x *.ctd files 1 x *.sea file 1 x *.sum file 5. big.doc the data report for cruises au9501,au9604 and au9601 (MS WORD document) Notes: * Could you please confirm that the files for all 4 cruises came through okay (I ftp'd them to the INCOMING directory). * Cruise au9404 above is the cruise 09AR9404-1 that you asked about in your email. * Unfortunately I can't help with the Franklin cruise 09FA693 (I only deal with Aurora Australis data). You'll have to talk to Kim.Finney@marine.csiro.au (she's the data products manager at CSIRO) or John Church. Note however that the southern portion of P11 was done on the Aurora Australis (cruise 09AR9391 which has been at the WOCE office for a long time). * Other Aurora Australis cruises already at the WOCE office are: 09AR9309 09AR9391 09AR9407 * I still owe you Aurora cruise au9101 (an old one).
I've just ftp'd a data report to the INCOMING directory at the WOCE office. It's the report for Aurora Australis cruises au9501, au9604 and au9601: filename: big.doc WORD 6 document, IBM-type PC ftp'd as a binary file note that to see diagrams you actually have to print it out I've also mailed a couple of hard copies to you.
