I think the -ER values are estimates of the uncertainty associated with their measurements (the documentation is not too clear). We did not even examine those values. I am not sure what to do about this case. This particular CFC group is the only one which reports individual error estimates for each measurement. In the file Birgit Klein sent us for our DQE process, these columns had been removed. I could send her documentation to you which summarizes their precision/accuracy estimate (which others could use to calculate the errors), and then remove the -ER columns.
Hi Mark- Sarilee and I have been working on remerging all of the CFC values in the list below. I don't think she's run into any problems, but I need to run some questions by you before I finish. A12- Our file has CFC-ER values, so I just want to check and make sure that no updated values for CFC-ER exist to be merged along with the updated CFC values you sent us. So, right now if I were to merge new CFC's, these values would be associated with the old CFC-ER values.
11.10.2006 DBK Notes on remerging CFC values sent by Mark Warner on 10.31.2006. Used mrgsea to merge new CFC values for CFC-11 and CFC-12 and associated QC Flags (2 flags were in each file). Merging was performed with no errors. Since existing WOCE file had only one Q word the more recent Q2 values were used from Warner's file. File was format checked with wocecvt with no errors. CSV and netcdf files were generated with no errors. NOTE: This file contains error values for CFC11 and CFC12, however updated file for CFC's contained no error values to be mergeds. New CFC11 and CFC12 values may be associated with old error values in the newly merged file. This will be brought to Mark Warner's attention. -------------- As per Mark Warner (11/12/2006), the error value columns have been removed from the file. He will submit the documentation regarding the error calculations and this will be included in the online documentation.
t was decided at today's CCHDO meeting to merge or remerge CFCs for all WHP cruises in Mark Warner's CFC DQE file (Southern Ocean WHO lines). This will assure all that the CFCs for these cruises are indeed updated as intended. Danie and Sarilee will attend to this promptly. Danie will see that the sections of greatest urgency to Lynne receive top priority. The list of cruises in Mark's file was as follows: A21: EXPOCODE: 06MT11_5 A23: EXPOCODE: 74JC10_1 I06S: EXPOCODE: 35MFCIVA_1 MARGINEX: EXPOCODE: 09AR9604_1 S03_S04I: EXPOCODE: 09AR9404_1 S04A: EXPOCODE: 06AQANTIII_4 S04I: EXPOCODE: 320696_3 S04P: EXPOCODE: 90KDIOFFE6_1 SR04A_A12: EXPOCODE: 06AQANTX_4 SR04_ANTXV4: EXPOCODE: 06ANT15_4 It may be that the CFCs for the following cruises from the list above have already been updated: > sr04antxv4 > s04p > a23 > a21 But, to be certain, the CCHDO will update them as well. As far as why these cruises did not get updated with Mark's DQE'd CFCs, we have no idea. Sorry. All of the other ocean basins' CFCs were updated years ago. Jim Swift

Merged data submitted by Birgit Klein in March of 1999 into online file. File was located in web site ...a12/original/1999.03.12_A12-SR04_06AQANTX_4.Klein_CFC.HE.TR.NE. Merged CFC-11, CF11ER, CFC-12, CF12ER, TRITUM, TRITER, HELIUM, HELIER, DELHE3, DELHER, NEON, and NEONER. Had to e-mail her to clarify some non-WOCE standard QUALT1 flags and units for CFC's. Copies of her e-mails are in my notes file which has been sent to Jerry. Here are my notes on A12/SR04 merging. Made new exchange file. Both the new exchange file and hyd file have been put online. Merged CFC-11, CF11ER, CFC-12, CF12ER, TRITUM, TRITER, HELIUM, HELIER, DELHE3, DELHER, NEON, and NEONER. File with these data submitted by Birgit Klein March 11, 1999 web site ...atlantic/a12/original/1999.03.12_A12-SR04_06AQANTX_4.KLEIN_CFC.HE.TR.NE. File name is reformatted2.txt Merged into online file a12hy.txt (19990817WHPOSIOSA) File from Klein had non-WOCE standard QUALT1 flags. I e-mailed her asking her to let me know what flags should be used. See copy of her e-mail below. I converted the flags as proposed and agreed upon. The units for the CFC-11, CF11ER, CFC-12, and CF12ER were labelled UMOL/KG. Sent Birgit Klein an e-mail asking her if they were really UMOL/KG or if they are just mislabelled and should say PMOL/KG. Changed units for CFC-11 and CFC-12 to PMOL/KG. See e-mail from Birgit Klein below. On Fri, 17 May 2002 10:32:58 +0200 Birgit Klein wrote: thanks for your mail, I am glad the data get finally merged. I agree with your conversions of our flags to woce standards. I should have resubmitted the data with proper flags, thank you for doing this job. Sarilee Anderson wrote: In March of 1999 you sent a data set to the WHP office here atScripps. I am in the process of checking all data sets for completeness and find that the data you sent has not been merged into the online file. In your e-mail to Steve you indicate that some of the quality flags are non-WOCE standards. We need WOCE standard flags. Would you look at the attached ascii file and let me know what flags I should use for the data. I propose for the helium and neon to use 5 where you have 1 4 where you have 7 2 where you have 8 For the cfc's 2 where you have 1 3 where you have 7 Please let me know if you agree with what I propose. If not, please let me know what you would like done.
CTD has been converted to exchange using the new code and put online.
Created *check.txt file. could not produce .ps file.
The exchange bottle file name in directory and index file was modified to lower case. CTD exchange files were put online.
Bottle file in exchange format has been linked to website.
2000.12.11 KJU File contained here is a CRUISE SUMMARY and NOT sumfile. Documentation is online. 2000.10.11 KJU Files were found in incoming directory under whp_reports. This directory was zipped, files were separated and placed under proper cruise. All of them are sum files. Received 1997 August 15th.

It looks like you're going to have to create the mapping for these flags.
(CFC, He, Tr, Ne) I have placed the updated (1999.08.17) files for A12 online and updated all of the html tables accordingly.
Helium and Neon use a non woce quality code scheme. I can translate it and include a translation table in my merging notes, but the originator in her submission of data in March 1999 offered to resubmit using WOCE qual code scheme.
a12su.txt Reformatted .sum file. Mostly added and deleted spaces to make the file conform to the WHPO format. Added some 0 (zero) in the lat. and lon. fields to make consistent with the WHPO format. 12hy.txt Some pressures were not in descending order and I reordered them. File has AMONIUM which does not appear to be a WOCE parameter. Ran over wocecvt and sumcheck with no errors. Sarilee Anderson 17 Aug. 1999
