Tritium Data
Dear Steve: Attached are the electronic data you requested in an excel 2003 format. I hope that is acceptable. Regards, Charlene Grall Tritium Laboratory Steve Diggs wrote: Dear Ms. Grall, I was the WOCE Hydrographic Data manager, which has since led to CLIVAR and now a program called GO-SHIP. All of this to say that I'm hunting down all of the old WOCE data, and I was in Sidney at IOS/Canada earlier in the week working with CS Wong's former associates on finding all of the missing data. Of particular interest to the folks there are the 1993 Tritium data from the NESMEYANOV. I have attached a PDF of the scanned version of this document. Bob Key of Princeton referred me to you as the person most likely to have a digital copy of these data. Apparently, your lab analyzed these results way back in 1996. If you have these data, please let me know if they are public and if they are in suitable condition to be included in our online WOCE catalogue.
To get an electronic copy of this data, e-mail Charlene Grall (<mailto:cgrall@rsmas.miami.edu>cgrall@rsmas.miami.edu). Even though Gote's lab has closed, I think she still works at RSMAS. If so, she'll be able to retrieve an electronic copy. If that fails, let me know and I'll have the data keyed - it's not that much.
I found some more of the data you wanted - Tritium results for 1993 Woce Line P1W (aka Cruise 1993-16 ... aboard Nesmeyanov). I seem to have the data on paper only. Attached is a .pdf of the scanned document. <<WOCE_1993_P1W_9316_Tritium_Results.pdf>> Also attached is the corrected Excel file (C13) data, with a typo fixed and some redundant data removed. <<miscl_dc13_4_S_Diggs_02c.xls>>
I have put the file CCHDO_1.zip on MEDS ftp site for you to download. Most of the meta data that we have is embedded in the surface parameter fields of the data record. Once you have had a look at the format and the available information, I can try to track down any further ancillary data that you may need. All of the data arriving here is put into our inhouse format. For the 1993-16 cruise aboard the Ak Nesmeyanov, I have the following profiles only, Water Property Data includes: C CTD Pressure C CTD Sea Water Temp C CTD Salinity (+ data quality flag) C Bottle Salinity (+ data quality flag) C Oxygen:Dissolved (+ data quality flag) C Silicate(SiO4) (+ data quality flag) C Nitrate (NO3) (+ data quality flag) C Nitrite (NO2) (+ data quality flag) C Phosphate (PO4) (+ data quality flag) C CFC-11 (aka Freon-11) (+ data quality flag) C CFC-12 (aka Freon-12) (+ data quality flag) C Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) (aka TCO2) (+ data quality flag) C Total Alkalinity (+ data quality flag) C pH (acidity) (+ data quality flag) C Delta O18 (O18/O16 Isotope Ratio) (+ data quality flag) and for the 1994-03 cruise abourd the Tully, I have: 1 Sample_Number n/a 104 124 2 Bottle_Number n/a 3 Pressure dbar 501.1 4201.2 4 Temperature 'deg C (IPTS68)' 1.4988 3.8189 5 Salinity PSS-78 34.0755 34.6804 6 Flag:Salinity ' ' 7 Salinity:Bottle PSS-78 34.0613 34.6795 8 Flag:Salinity:Bottle ' ' 9 Oxygen:Dissolved umol/kg 20.2 143.7 10 Flag:Oxygen:Dissolved ' ' 11 Silicate umol/L 102.8 173.1 12 Flag:Silicate ' ' 13 Nitrate umol/L 37.8 45.6 14 Flag:Nitrate ' ' 15 Nitrite umol/L 0 0 16 Flag:Nitrite ' ' 17 Phosphate umol/L 2.7 3.31 18 Flag:Phosphate ' ' 19 Chlorofluorocarbon_11 pmol/kg 0 0.388 20 Flag:Chlorofluorocarbon_11 ' ' 21 Chlorofluorocarbon_12 pmol/kg 0 0.777 22 Flag:Chlorofluorocarbon_12 ' ' 23 Carbon:Dissolved:Inorganic umol/kg 2316.2 2396.4 24 Flag:Carbon:Dissolved:Inorganic ' ' 25 Alkalinity:Total:CRM:Correc umol/kg 2323.1 2443.2 26 Flag:Alkalinity:Total:CRM:Corrected ' '
Lynne Talley noted that whenever the temperature was negative the THETA was -9.000. I calculated THETA for all the negative temperatures. Made new exchange file and sent notes to Jerry.
I'm using the bottle data file p01why.txt right now for the property-property plots in the atlas, and finding that whenever the temperature is negative (there are many such points), THETA is set to -9. That is, the program that was used to calculate THETA in the first place was probably checking for negative temperatures as opposed to -9. I don't know where the problem came in - if the submitted data set had these values, or if they were calculated at the WHPO during a merging step. In any case, they need to be recalculated.
Made changes to the TCARBN and ALKALI flags for station 7, cast 1, sample 155, flags were 2 and 9 respectively, changed to 9 and 2 and station 32, cast 1, sample 404, flag was 9 for TCARBN but there was a value there so changed flags to 2 re Kozyr's e-mail. Made new exchange file. Notes of p01w changes: Changed Q1 and Q2 flags for TCARBN and ALKAKI in online file re Alex Kozyr's e-mail.

Merged TCO2 and Alkalinity from CDIAC web site into Bottle file and made new Exchange file. New bottle files on-line. Details in Notes file. Notes on P01W merging Apr 19, 2002 D.Muus 1. Merged TCARBN and ALKALI from: /usr/export/html-public/data/onetime/pacific/p01/p01w/original/2002.03.08_P01W_TCO2_ALK_DQE_UPDT_KOZYR/p01w.dat into bottle file from web (20020131WHPOSIODM) This replaces TCARBON and ALKALI data merged Jan 31, 2002. 2. Changed all 1 and 0 flags in QUALT words to 9 where missing value is given. Station 2, samples 40 through 44 (2401.0-3200.1db), have silicate values but quality flag is 1. Values look good compared to adjacent stations and can find no mention of them in DQE reports. Changed flags from 1 to 2. 3. Made new exchange file for Bottle data. 4. Checked new bottle file with Java Ocean Atlas.
I have downloaded the new carbon file from the CDIAC website as per Alex Kozyr's email today 2002.03.08. file contains newest data and flags and is ready for merging. data are in ..../onetime/pacific/p01/p01w/original/2002.03.08_P01W_TCO2_ALK_DQE_UPDT_KOZYR
The CDIAC p01w.dat file is ready to be merged, in fact it is already merged with the hydrographic and some chemical data from WHPO p01why.txt file.
I have downloaded the new carbon file from the CDIAC website as per Alex Kozyr's email today 2002.03.08. file contains newest data and flags and is ready for merging. data are in ..../onetime/pacific/p01/p01w/original/2002.03.08_P01W_TCO2_ALK_DQE_UPDT_KOZYR
One of the problems with my merge of TCARBN and ALKALI in January was the original data file had no sample numbers, no bottle numbers and no missing-value-indicators (just blanks). So merging was done by station and pressure only. Also the blank missing values required extra manipulation and I must have got the missing value for sample 155 swapped. Is the new file "p01w.dat" from your web site ready to merge with the truncation problem resolved? Including sample#s, bottle#s and missing-value-indicators in data to be merged makes everything much easier.
Merged TCO2 and Alkalinity into Bottle file and made new Exchange file. Made minor corrections to Summary file. Notes on P01W merging Feb 1, 2002 D.Muus 1. Merged TCARBN and ALKALI from: /usr/export/html-public/data/onetime/pacific/p01/p01w/original/20010226_CARBON_TALLEY_P01W/p01w_carbon_data_removed_returns.txt into bottle file from web (20010913WHPOSIOKJU) 2. No Cast number, Sample number or Bottle number in C.S. Wong/John Page original data file. Merged using modified Station number, assumed Cast# = 1 and Pressure. 3. Units given for TALK (ALKALI) are uE/kg. Assume this is equivalent to UMOL/KG. (Units given for TCO2 are uM/kg.) 4. No quality codes for TCARBN or ALKAKI given. Used "2" for all data present. 5. Blanks in original data set replaced by missing value indicator "-9.0" with quality code "9". 6. QUALT1 and QUALT2 have some "0"s and "1"s. Left as is for now. 7. Changed EXPOCODE in Bottle file from 09BM9316_1 to 90BM9316_1 to match Summary file and DOC. 8. Added "GPS" to Summary file for Station 35, Cast 1, BE to allow exchange file conversion. Also removed control-Ms from end of lines and blank lines from end of file. 9. Made new exchange file for Bottle data. 10. Checked new bottle file with Java Ocean Atlas.
Corrected CASTNOs in CTD files and made temporary SUMfile for Exchange file translation. CTD files had stations as HSXX where they were XX in the SUMfile. Also, CTD files had sequentially increasing CASTNOs in them, where the SUMfile showed no CASTNO greater than 1 for all CASTs. Corrected WOCE formatted CTD files accordingly, translated WOCE-CTD files into Exchange, made zip archives of both. All files placed online (website).
Sumfile, Bottle and exchange bottle file expocodes were modified. They read RUBM9316_1 and needed to be according to DPC-13, 90BM9316_1.
DOC New documents have been put online. Old documents were moved to original directory.
Notes on P01W CFC merging Aug 23, 2001. D. Muus 1. New CFC-11 and CFC-12 from: /usr/export/html-public/data/onetime/pacific/p01/p01w/original/ 20010709_CFC_WISEGARVER_P01W/20010709.164450_WISEGARVER_P01W_p01w_CFC_DQE.dat merged into web SEA file as of Aug 21, 2001 (20010326WHPOSIOKJU) SEA file QUALT2 words were mostly "1"s so changed QUALT2 to be identical to QUALT1 prior to merging. 2. SUMMARY file (20010326WHPOSIOKJU) missing NAV entry for Sta 35 BE. Entered UNK to make exchange file conversion work. Probably should be GPS but I cannot find any confirmation. 3. Exchange file checked using Java Ocean Atlas.
I have replaced current online bottle files with new files containing merged updated CFC values. Data was sent by Wisegarver and merged by D. Muus. All table entries reflect this replacement. previous files moved to original subdirectory. A copy of merging notes will be sent to J. Kappa under separate email.
I have placed the new files containing updated CFC values into the p01w subdirectory called original/20010709_CFC_WISEGARVER_P01W. data are in need of merging into the current online bottle file as of this date.
This is information regarding line: P01W ExpoCode: 90BM9316_1 Cruise Date: 1993/08/30 - 1993/09/21 From: WISEGARVER, DAVID Email address: wise@pmel.noaa.gov Institution: NOAA Country: USA The directory this information has been stored in is: 20010709.164450_WISEGARVER_P01W The format type is: ASCII The data type is: BottleFile The Bottle File has the following parameters: CFC-11, CFC-12 The Bottle File contains: CastNumber StationNumber BottleNumber SampleNumber WISEGARVER, DAVID would like the data PUBLIC. And would like the following done to the data: merge CFC data Any additional notes are: CFC data on sio98 scale
Bottle file in exchange format has been put online.
Lynne - It might be worth while filling Alex in on the situation, just to see if he feels strongly that he "should" see the data before you use them. Of course, you're welcome to use them as they are if you're comfortable doing so. It's just that Alex is our carbon data guru.
Expocodes for sum and bottle were modified. Expocodes in all ctd files have been editted to match the underscored expocode in the sum and bottle files. New files were zipped and replaced existing ctd files online. Old files were moved to original directory.
Got word from Eric this A.M. that he will fund NOSAMS at the rate of 1000/year to analyze previously collected, but unfunded C14 samples. Highest priority will be to fill in Pacific "holes" starting with P14S15S (NOAA), P15N (Wong) and P1 (Japan). Policy decision supported by WOCE SSC. Eric would, if possible, like these data to be included in the atlas. In reality I don't know if this is possible/practical, but I will do everything possible to expedite. Scheduling at NOSAMS will be complicated, but order listed above is the "scientific" priority as of now.
I have just received the carbon data files from C.S. Wong for section P1W. These were not sent to Alex Kozyr, so I would appreciate your advice on how to proceed with them - should I just merge them with David's or Sarilee's help for the atlas, or should we go ahead and merge them for the WHPO online files?
txt version needs to be cleaned up.
I agree, please change all designations of "RU" to "90" for the Russian cruises. We agreed on this a long time ago.
Although samples were collected for He, H-3 and C-14 on the Russian cruise, I could not obtain the funding for these analyses. Thus, no data were submitted for these properties. C.S. Wong
there are no Helium, Tritium or C14 data submitted. Could you please let us know the disposition of these data and when we might be able to receive them from you?
