TIME column correction
As received the TIME column included hours higher than 24 and minutes
higher than 60 (as noted initially by S Anderson, and subsequently
others).
From examining the incorrect and corrected TIME values, the following
was concluded: The TIME column when produced included hours, minutes,
and seconds represented by 6 numbers (HHMMSS). When this column was
truncated to hour and minute, the cut was misplaced producing the
incorrect TIME with partial numbers from the hours and seconds on
either side the minutes (HMMS) instead of hours followed by minutes
(HHMM).
The new times were received in a corrected SUM file, which have
replaced the old column and fall within expected TIME value ranges.
The following actions were taken:
corrected SUM file copied from original/1999.08.25_SUM_SDIGGS/new.sum
removed header lines within file, new.sum
copied time column into CCHDO SUM file, a25su.txt
created new Exchange file from WOCE file and corrected SUM file

Today I uploaded the modified data for this cruise. My "README" file was copied into the "Notes" window, but it is a bet terse. This version of the data has a few minor corrections and 2 major additions. The README contains additional metadata.
1. I started with your files (downloaded 9/28/05)
2. I added alkalinity and pH values which I received from Aida Rios (9/28/05)
3. I added flags for alk and ph and then QC'ed these data
4. In your version of the files, station numbers 21 and higher had bottle number 21 where bottle number 1 should have been. In most cases for these stations the result was 2 bottles/station numbered 21 (cast 1). There is a very high probability that the original listing was an error. Additionally, the double listing caused all sorts of problems with numerous software programs. In each instance (sta 21-139) the "extra" bottle number 21 was the deepest at the station. In the file I submitted, all the "erroneous" bottle 21 were reset to bottle 1.
5. I just noticed. In my README file under the pH listing it says "referenced to 15C". This is a typo. It should say "referenced to 25C". The pH values were determined spectrophotometrically and are on the total H+ scale. With your filing system I think this means that you will need a pHtemp column with all values set to 25 where pH data exist. Metadata somewhere must indicate the total hydrogen scale.
Summary
The file I sent should be identical to what you have except for the addition of pH25,Alkalinity, phf, alkf and the modification of the above mentioned bottle numbers. The file I submitted is a perfect "row match" to what you have so a "merge" won't be necessary, just a column addition for the new stuff and a column swap for the revised bottle numbers (If you accept my revisions). The alkf and phf have been vetted with the data generators so no further action is required. Units are WOCE standard. This file has the same "ugly" properties of previous submissions from me (no rounding or truncation; trailing zeros dropped).
Your cruise summary table indicates that Smythe-Wright still "holds" the CFC data, but the data are in the file. According to documentation, CFC113 and CCl4 were also measured, but no values are in either file. I have no new information regarding the CFC measurements.
The participants refer to this cruise as "FOUREX". I have no idea what this stands for, but it might be useful to add this bit of information to the "frontpage" for this cruise (http://cchdo.ucsd.edu/data/onetime/atlantic/a25/index.htm)
Further work
This cruise was included in GLODAPv1.1, however, since the carbon data is new, it will also be included in the CARINA collection. As part of that work we will determine if there are any significant systematic errors in these data and quantify any that are found. Once that work is complete I will be supplying you, CDIAC and CARBOOCEAN with a table that summarizes the results of this "secondary QC" procedure.
I now have 3 additional occupations for the Spain-Greenland portion of this cruise (occupied 2002,4,6) commonly known as Ovide02, etc. These will be submitted sometime early next year.

Today I downloaded the latest version of the hydrodata for A25 from WHPO and merged it with the carbon data from the file you recently provided. Subsequently, I ran the TCO2 and Alk data through my normal QC procedures. I flagged a small number of samples as questionable and then forwarded the entire file and my notes to Alex for further QC.
Both parameters appear to be high precision. I have not yet compared these results to any other cruise results to check for accuracy agreement. Once Alex finishes looking at the data and we have agreed on flags, he will contact you to determine if you agree with our flags. As usual, you have the final word on flags. When we have all 3 agreed, the carbon data and carbon flags will be forwarded to WHPO for inclusion in their records.
These data, along with results from a few other high quality cruises, will be extremely important for final calibration of the CARINA data. Thank you again for sharing such a valuable data set with the community!
WOCE TIME in sumfile are too large (greater than 2359), however, file in original directory, a25su_rplcd_2000.11.06.txt, has correct times. Need to fix times in online version of sumfile.

8, units are pmol/kg.
As noted by Sarilee (in 1999) and recently by a data user, there are several times contained within the summary file in which the hours exceed 24 and the minutes exceed 60. I have written Bacon concerning this problem and requesting a solution or resubmission of the summary file.
At this time the erroneous times have been incorporated into the bottle exchange file and should be noted to be incorrect.
re_made *check.txt file for A25.
CTD has been converted to exchange using the new code and put online.
The following are results from the examminer.pl and plotter.pl code that were run on this cruise. Not all of the errors are reported but rather a summery of what was found. For more information you can go to the cruise directory, and look at the NEW file called CruiseLine_check.txt. Two plot files are also present. _oxy.ps and _sal.ps
_oxy.ps and _sal.ps created without any problems.
Errors reported in the Ctd file, Example bellow
Station #1 exists in a25_hy1.csv, but does not have a corresponding CTD file.
Station #10 exists in a25_hy1.csv, but does not have a corresponding CTD file.
The a25_ct1.zip file size seems to be to SMALL.

I have replaced the current sumfile with the reformatted sumfile completed by S. Anderson. This file was reformatted 1999.08.17 and never put online. All references have been updated to reflect this change. Old file moved to original subdirectory.
As per Bacon and Saunders I have unencrypted the CTD file for A25 and replaced the current complete bottle file (which contains non-public PH and ALKALI) with the new public file sent by Saunders on 2000.06.16 (which has the PH and ALKALI columns removed). Now all current online files are public.
thanks to Peter Saunders, Marta Alvarez and Stuart Cunningham sorting out CTD and bottle data QC & formatting, the A25 data, of which you have a copy, is now ready to be made public, with the small exceptions of which you are aware. Please ensure that Peter's second bottle data file, with CO2-related parameters removed, is the one you use.
Unfortunately two of the variables in the A25.sea will not become public for some while, namely pHT25 and alkalinity. I have constructed a second .sea file which omits these variables and placed it in the INCOMING directory.
You may choose to use this second version or overwrite the original with absent data values for these two variables.
You should hear from the PI about making the data public imminently.
I have placed the one time ctd and bottle data from cruise A25 in your incoming directory. If not all well let me know. You already have the summary file for this cruise. The bottle file in addition to oxygen and nutrients contains pH and Alkalinity, chlorophyll and phaeopigment. It contains no cfc data and you will have to contact Denise Smythe-Wright for that.
The PI for the cruise is Sheldon Bacon and I will get him to write you concerning making the data public (which I believe he will do).
Talley has data, permission to get it from her requested also.
I put the reformatted A25 .sum file on whpo in /usr/export/ftp/ pub/WHPO/S_ANDERSON/A25. There is also a readme.a25 file. There are problems with the time, many have hours greater than 24 and minutes greater than 60. Need to resolve this.
We have the sumfile online now for A25, the Bacon/Bryden cruise in the
north Atlantic from 1997 (Discovery).
All files and tables have been updated.
