The cruises you mention were part of the BEST programme (BEnguela Sources and Transports) which was a NSF project of Arnold Gordon (LDEO), Silvia Garzoli (then LDEO, now AOML), and Dale Pillsbury (OSU). The project was to deploy inverted echo sounders and current meters in the Cape Basin, supported by a CTD validation cruise, to measure the transport of the Benguela Current, monitor its variability and determine origins and ratio of Agulhas Current and South Atlantic Current source water masses. The cruises were Mooring Deployment Jun/Jul 1992 Africana V105 Bailey/Garzoli CTD survey May/Jun 1993 Discovery V202 Gordon Mooring Recovery Oct/Nov 1993 Maurice Ewing Garzoli The project was US-funded, Africana is a South African ship, Discovery British, Maurice Ewing American. I was not chief scientist on any of the cruises, although responsible for CTD data collection on the deployment and recovery cruises. The published data reports from the cruises are BELINNE, D.J., MELE, P., HUBER, B., and A. GORDON, 1996. I have reformatted the ctd files for this cruise and created a summary file. I have also created exchange and netcdf files. Index pages have been regenerated and all files are linked. Please note, the ship name for this cruise is not SADCO. This should be changed to MAURICE EWING. It also appears that Duncombe is the Chief Scientist for this cruise (although this is being confirmed in an email to Duncombe along with a request for a doc file). ALSO, although the email from Duncombe (by way of Jim Crease) states the dates for this curise are jun-jul 1992 the dates within the files are oct-nov 1993. It should be noted that the dates for the other ar09 cruise by Duncombe had oct-nov 1993 in the email, but have jun-jul within the files. Either the email was incorrect (being switched) or the files need to be edited to contain the correct dates. All of these issues were sent in an email to Duncombe along with a request for doc files for both ar09s on 2003.02.25. We are awaiting a reply before any further edits are made to the files.
The October 93 cruise data is in your ar09_bct.zip and rather than be called EW930801 as it is now should be 32309308_1 (3230 is the code for the Maurice Ewing)
Current Mtr cruise. CTD needs major rfmttng. Email either Duncombe or J. Crease for correct ChiSci info. Format CTD. Correct info in database. Get confirm. no BOT exists.
Dear Jim (Crease), Sorry for the delay in reply, I have been at sea. Yes, I can help. As it happens, I recently had those data cleaned up for submission to our local database. They are in quasi-s87 format (I haven't stuck strictly to 64 columns, records are not padded, date field has four-digit year, etc). I am not sure about the calibration quality. Checks were done against bottle salinity samples, but I am not sure whether any regression was actually applied. The data seem internally consistent (all three BEST cruises show (roughly) the same AABW type) but depending on your intended use of them I would recommend checking against other historical data to show up any gross inconsistencies. I can send you the files. How do you want them? Total size is 3.5M, tar-gzipped 888k. I don't know if this will get through our mail system. I am behind a firewall and we have no ftp site for you to collect from, possibly you have a site I can upload to? I will try the mailer, if that fails, we must talk again...

Arnold Gordon has given me the mid-deployment Discovery data set but I wondered if there was any calibrated bottle/ctd data from the deployment and recovery cruises
