Cruise report. RV "Professor Shtokman" cruise 36 Chief Scientist: Dr. Alexey Sokov P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia e-mail: sokov@gulev.sio.rssi.ru The cruise 36 of RV "Professor Shtokman" to the North Atlantic was a Russian contribution to the international ACCE/WOCE project, to study the Meridional Overturning Circulation. The ship departed Kaliningrad on October 3, 1997 and finally returned to Kaliningrad on December 18, 1997. On it's way the ship made calls at Hamburg twice (October 7-9, December 9-13); Ponta-Delgada (November 6- 7) and St.John's, Newfoundland (November 27-29). During the cruise overall 96 full depth hydrographic stations were occupied. The stations were grouped in 3 sections: 27 stations along 59.5N (from northern shelf of British Isles to SE Greenland); 58 stations along the western flank of Mid Atlantic Ridge (from Greenland to 24.5N) and 11 stations along 50.5W (from 24.5N to the continental slope of Newfoundland). Additionally 76 XBT drops were made along the 48N line AX3 (from Grand Banks to British Isle) A figure of the cruise track with stations position is attached. On each hydrographic station continuous profiles of temperature and conductivity/salinity were obtained by means of NB Mark-IIIC CTD. As well, a GO 24x2L rosette was used to collect water samples, which were used for on-board laboratory determination of salinity and oxygen concentration in the sea water. All the measurements were done with an accuracy required for the WOCE WHP.
